They are indeed, both in that word's modern meaning of 'great' and also the more old-fashioned but specific meaning of 'inspiring awe'.
(This may all sound pedantic, dear Zoe, but I was educated rather traditionally, and indeed continue to be educated rather traditionally whenever I get the chance with a lady with a firm attitude to educational matters and willingness – for a fee – to correct my many errors).
