My SO takes the view that if my licking damages her shoes, the problem is more likely with the tongue and the rest of the body it’s attached to, rather than the shoe itself. I don’t know how she knows that, not ever having licked a shoe herself, but she is quite adamant on the subject, so it’s best (and considerably less painful) to take her word for it. Different strokes, as you say.
